Delivery from the EU to Customers in the USA

1. Are there any customs duties or taxes when shipping from the EU to the USA?
Yes, the U.S. imposes customs duties on goods imported from the EU. The duty rate depends on the type of product, its classification, and the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code. Most products are subject to a customs duty ranging from 0% to 37.5%, but the rates for most goods fall within the 0%–10% range.
However, there is an exemption for low-value shipments: goods valued at $800 or less are typically exempt from customs duties and taxes. This is known as the "de minimis" threshold.
Note: U.S. states impose sales tax on goods, and the rate varies by state.

2. What is the "de minimis" exemption?
The "de minimis" exemption allows goods valued at $800 or less to be imported into the USA without paying customs duties or taxes. This exemption applies to most shipments, but certain restricted or regulated items may still be subject to duty, regardless of value.

3. How do I know if my shipment will incur customs duties or taxes?
To determine if your shipment will incur duties, you need to classify the product correctly according to the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). You can check the duty rate for specific items on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website, or consult a customs broker if you’re unsure about the classification.
If your goods exceed the $800 de minimis threshold, you will likely have to pay duties and taxes, depending on the product's classification.

4. Will I have to pay sales tax when my goods arrive in the USA?
In addition to customs duties, U.S. states may impose sales tax on imported goods, which varies by state. The sales tax is typically assessed when the goods are delivered to the customer in the destination state. Rates can range from 0% to 10% or more, depending on the state.

5. How does the customs clearance process work for shipments from the EU to the USA?
When goods arrive in the U.S., they must go through customs clearance by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The process includes:

  • Submission of customs documents (invoice, shipping label, customs declaration).
  • Payment of duties and taxes (if applicable).
  • Inspection: CBP may inspect the goods to ensure compliance with U.S. laws and regulations.

Once the goods clear customs, they are released for delivery.

6. What additional fees might be involved in the delivery process?
In addition to customs duties and taxes, the shipping carrier (e.g., FedEx, UPS, DHL) may charge brokerage or handling fees to cover the cost of customs clearance services. These fees can vary depending on the carrier and the complexity of the shipment.

7. Do I need a customs broker for my shipment?
For most small shipments (especially under $800), you may not need a customs broker. However, if the goods are high-value, complex, or subject to specific regulations (such as controlled goods), a customs broker may be required to facilitate the clearance process and ensure compliance with U.S. laws.

8. Can I track my shipment?
Yes, most international shipping carriers offer tracking services for shipments from the EU to the USA. You can monitor the progress of your delivery and receive updates on customs clearance and estimated delivery times.

9. How long does it take for my shipment to reach the USA from the EU?
Delivery times can vary depending on the shipping method and carrier. On average:

  • Standard shipping can take 7 to 14 business days.
  • Expedited shipping (e.g., express services from DHL, UPS, or FedEx) usually takes 3 to 5 business days.

The customs clearance process can sometimes add additional time, depending on the volume of goods being processed and any issues that arise.

10. Who is responsible for paying the customs duties and taxes?
Typically, the recipient (customer) is responsible for paying customs duties, taxes, and any additional fees upon delivery. However, this can vary depending on the terms of sale between the sender and the customer (e.g., DDP - Delivered Duty Paid, or DDU - Delivered Duty Unpaid).
If you are sending a gift or a low-value item (under $800), customs duties and taxes may not apply.

If you have more questions about the shipping process from the EU to the USA, feel free to contact your shipping carrier or consult a customs professional to help you navigate the requirements.
